I was also affected by this issue, and opened a duplicate bug (which is
now closed): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
terminal/+bug/2089835. The symptoms are exactly the same: freezing for
about 2 seconds, then crashing all windows.
For me it's very reproducible. Fresh Ubuntu 24.04

Thank you very much, for whatever reason I was unable to find that

Public bug reported:
I've freshly installed my Framework 13 7040 with Ubuntu 24.04.1 (ZFS +
full disk encryption + Install 3rd party + Download) and gnome-terminal
crashes at seemingly random times, but I'm semi-reliably able to
reproduce it when detaching a window.

Problem still present. Just experienced it on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. The
provieded workaround to get it removed fixed it.. for now.

@Tom didn't realize that - I'm having the exact same issues that
sometimes a reboot is required after suspend (which I use heavily)..
Didn't connect that with gnome-settings yet.

Also having this issue on my Acer aspire v3-772g with clean install on
18.04, although - no nvidia driver(s) installed. Really a clean install.
I tried installing the nvidia driver, but then I came across a different
issue, which seems to be related to bug #1752053.

An additional note is that this also seems to occur when I unlock my
notebook and the settings is not yet open (but I used it before locking
it).

I'm also experiencing this exact problem for some months now (using
Ubuntu 14.10 and 14.04) with an Intel and Nvidia (Optimus) graphic
cards..
Workaround seems to work well here. The only thing is that my windows on
other workspaces are going back to the main screen, which is obvious.
