Just an update to confirm that this seems quite similar to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/438561 and that like some people reported in that bug I can get the update to work correctly by running it from tty1 with gdm not running. -- installation breaks when gconftool can't use
