New Mesa drivers seem to have fixed the problem for both Firefox and
Thunderbird.

Thunderbird 91.8.1 (64 bit)
Received various updates yesterday which required a reboot. After
reboot, base system operates fine, but Thunderbird and Firefox fail to
open. As far as I can tell, these are the only application

marked all upgrades in Synaptic and rebooted. I got the alert that a system
problem had been detected.
