running 2.6.32-23-generic and I have no problem with default kubuntu
video driver anymore. Moreover, the default video driver works
perfectly: nothing is slow, all effects are working like they should be.

Just want to share my expirience about this problem.
I also met the same issue in Kubuntu. After installing fglrx the
"bright-display" issue is fixed, however a new issues are introduced by
fglrx. The whole UI is much slower with fglrx. Just as an example, when
I click "Exit-Shutdown" the shutdown
Seems to be fixed in Ubuntu 10.04.

I got the same bug ... Right after upgrade to 10.04 my screen became a
hell-bright ... After install fglrx and rebooting it is OK ...

OK, I solved this problem by renaming printer in Windows, not in Ubuntu.
Pity you can't easially rename it in Ubuntu.

Btw, I tried to set vi as default editor/viewer in mc like described
here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/midnightcommander-set-vi-as-default-

After I make:
Open=%var{EDITOR:vi} %f
View=%var{EDITOR:vi} %f
mc still using nano to edit, but vi to view :)

I can confirm this problem in Ubuntu 9.10.
mc is using nano as default editor (when you press F4 on file), while
using internal mc viewer (when pressing F3).
There is an option "Options-Configuration-Use internal editor" to force
mc to use internal editor, BUT IT IS NOT PERSISTENT. I select that
