The contents of my /etc/fstab is:
proc/proc procdefaults0 0

For my notebook, this problem is fixed in Ubuntu 9.10.
I also have the wireless light blinking now.

tried everything that involves "acpi=force", "apm=off", "rmmod snd_hda_intel",
