I checked the log files on the system (by booting to a LiveUSB sesssion
and accessing the partitions from there) and dmesg & boot.log are empty,
syslog hasn't even been created yet. Thus it seems to me that it isn't
getting anywhere with loading the kernel and is an issue with GRUB2.

Also happening here with a fresh install of Kubuntu 9.04 and KDE 4.22.
Even the cursor themes installed by default don't work, the only one
that doesn't get half its icons overwritten with Oxygen is the KDE
classic theme from KDE 2 and 3. I agree with the previous poster, this
is pretty annoying.
