I had the same problem, didn't test it for a while but now I don't see
the problem any more. It seems that the bugfix from kernel 4.9.61 has
made its way Ubuntu, closing this bug.

If I enable 3d acceleration in VirtualBox and install virtualbox-guest-
dkms-hwe, then everything works fine (even xfce4-display-settings with
non-native resolution).
Bionic works fine, even with 3d acceleration disabled.

One more addition (I can't edit it): Before I realized that I should
have made a backup (since I didn't know the update caused the issue), I
ran my application on another VM and it worked fine (e.g. Zenity started
and no problems with indicator applets, configuration utilities etc). I

I highly doubt that it has something to do with VT-x since both host and
guest are x64, and VirtualBox does not support x64 guests without VT-x.
Anyway, my CPU is i7-4510U.
There is an update for VirtualBox extension pack, I have not installed
it yet.

I just installed virtualbox-guest-source-hwe instead of virtualbox-
guest-dkms-hwe and that does not cause these problems (e.g. it works as
expected) I don't really know what the advantage of one over the other
is in real life, but it helps me out. Anyway, one would expect the

correspond to the last written pattern before i ran test #7.
Since i only see the problem with i386 builds (my machine is i386 but
the x64 version of memtest seems to run fine), i decided to re-build the
memtest from the source p
I have a Compaq N610c (Pentium 4 1.8ghz, relatively old) and also experience
problems with test 7.
However, I don't see the problem with the original build from www.memtest.org.
