I'm suffering from a similar problem which happens every time I boot the
machine. The drum sound is played, but the login window isn't shown for
about 30s
I've attached a bootchart to illustrate it.

The new xserver-xorg-video-intel - 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu1 does make xbacklight
_report_ the display brightness, but there is no way to actually change
it using xbacklight/gnome-brightness-applet. This problem occurs a
samsung x360 laptop.

I have the brightness issues on Karmic with kms as well with a Samsung
x360 laptop.
/sys/class/backlight/... is populated and looks okay, but there is no
visible change in brightness when altering the values. Booting the
kernel with 'nomodeset' makes brightness work again.
xbacklight says "No out
This is no longer a problem for me with the current (8.10) release.
This bug can be closed as far as I am concerned.

In answer to your 2 questions:
1) The "intel"-driver doesn't need the DisplayInfo option setting to get it to
work. I would certainly call that an improvement
2) My xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files are attached

After upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy. The X server stopped working. The
machine gets as far as displaying an empty console terminal which you
can't escape. Rebooting in recovery mode and looking at the
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows th
Firefox crashed after trying to show a javascript popup.
The cpu-usage was 100% for 10 to 15 seconds and then it crashed.
It's not the same bug, but they may be related.

After switching from sysvinit --> upstart my X server won't respond to
keyboard commands (not even CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE) until I select the
'Remove login via XDMCP option' (using the mouse), press cancel and THEN
(and only then) can I enter my username
