notification bubble or on the notification area icon causes the
respective window to move to the front, but will not change to the
current workspace.

A similar issue happens on my setup (compiz in hardy): vertically
maximized windows appear below the bottom panel.
Temporary workaround for me is moving the panel away from the bottom to
another screen edge and back again.

Partial Workaround: press Ctrl-W to close the Nautilus window. See if
new Nautlus Windows will still appear that large.
If the Nautilus window is not maximized, but enlarged beyond the screen
border, try using ALT+middle click to resize it.

This happens at my installation too (getent gives ~10k registered
users). When logging with a local user and the network disabled all is
ok, but if the network is enabled the panel freezes on login and the
fast-user-switch-applet task runs at 100%. Now, I can't remove the
package as ubuntu-desktop
Same issue here, solved by disabling "legacy keyboard support" in the
BIOS. Award BIOS version 6.00PG, if it is of any use.
