Already said on the second comment that I have the problem, but I'd like
to add that I am also using the slide show, and that the first image
appears okay. Upon changing the wallpaper, the screen turns white, and
every time the wallpaper changes, I see the new one in a flash.

latitude D620 laptop) with "intel" driver, KDE 4.0.2
