it's been a long time since I submitted this. In the meanwhile, I also went
edgy->feisty and now I'm running debian lenny. I never did other upgrades and,
to be honest, I can't even remember whether I found such a problem or not in
edgy->feisty. Sorry about that.

seems like this got fixed in the latest R 2.5.0, at least the NEWS
states:
The X11 dataentry() now has support for X Input Methods (contributed by
Ei-ji Nakama).
Hope that fixes my problem.

thanks for pointing out this. I think I had SCIM installed at one point
just because it was a dependency of the ubuntu-desktop metapackage.
Actually, I'm not using it at all.
Also, I tried removing SCIM, but the problem persists.

This "new" version was released October 31, 2006 and it's considered the
only stable version by the upstream developers. GRASS 6.0.2 is tagged as
"old" by the GRASS development team.
Keeping for another 6 months an old version in the official repositories
doesn't make much sense IMHO.

The developers aren't even willing to give support for the old version
in Ubuntu repositories, as I found last week when trying to get opensync
to work on my feisty laptop. They provide an external repository but
only for edgy.

I really would like to have data.entry commands working.
I noticed that this occurs on my laptop (Feisty), but not on my desktop
that is running a slightly non-upgraded version of Dapper (no ADSL at
home, too lazy).
