Changing preferences in VLC should not crash compiz/unity or vlc.
Ncurses and skins2 is something I remember choosing, to check out the effects.

I can't work with banshee at this time, don't like it at all--so I'm looking to
purge-->re-install vlc.

I rebooted from un-installing the fglrx-ati amd64 driver.
Thats from another bug, which only gives wallpaper.
So rebooting gave me all the panels and Ctrl+Alt+T, for now... plus this
