There are two sound devices appearing in the volume control. The first
is the audio chip on the mother board; the second is the hdmi audio on
the graphics card.

I will confirm this issue.
I have the same problem with a Radeon 7500. This occurs on the final hardy
livecd. The workaround for this is to add the "single" to the boot params and
then drop to a root shell and change Xorg.conf to use the vesa driver. I'll
post my with kern.0.log, xorg.0.lo

I had this problem while trying to reboot my laptop. I'm not sure if
the issues are inter-related but I logged out to reload the vboxdrv and
also was having trouble with 802.1x and NetworkManager all day. All of
this is on kernel -14.
I had an issue in -13 but it is working in -14 now. I dont know for
sure if it is neccessary but reinstalling the firmware helped me some on
the -14 kernel. Same Broadcom 4306.

Sorry, not only do i get a kernal panic if it installed the machine
completely freezes. With no escape sequences working, and no tty1-6.
So im not quite sure how i can figure out its PCI information.
