I have suffered from this same issue with my IBM R51 Laptop. The
solution I am going with for now is to remove "Compiz" completely. I
would rather have a functioning machine over one with fancy graphics,
but doesn't boot. So far so good:
Command I used to remove Compiz:
"sudo apt-get remove -

I was installing Ubuntu onto a computer that already contained a Windows OS,
hoping to setup a dual boot system.
When presented with the Partitioner options, I felt confused as to why the
slider was at the very bottom of the 4 selections I was faced with - especially
since
feisty update from edgy. amd64. athlon64 x2 nforce asus motherboard.
the default edgy kernel 2.6.17 recognizes my sata hard drives fine.
however none of the feisty default kernels recognize the sata drives.
The feisty amd 64 altnerate cd does not recognize the drives either.
