2 month ago I faund way to make sound works after plugging/unplugging
phones, boot and suspend.
The reason was in /etc/apm/scripts.d/alsa.
Now it works for me. Hope patch in attach helps U.
As a bonus in patch added feature to almost instant sound off then close
notebook and go to sleep, as it m

I use iBook g3 500 and ubuntu dapper (updated 2 weeks ago). I have same
problem - sound begin to freeze after 2 minutes when I use ESD or ALSA
in any player (XMMS, Rhyphmbox, Totem, GMPC). Then I use OSS in XMMS or
GMPC it plays better, sometimes OK. In breasy all works good.

after turn iBook from suspend sound absent. I can turn it off usualy by
connecting headphones and disconnecting it. Sonetimes helps increasing sound

There is a project RUSXMMS, wich add teg reconvert on the fly function
to xmms (http://sourceforge.net/projects/rusxmms). Hope it'll be merged
to XMMS someday.

I confirm that bug - all cyrillic characters in mp3 tags looks wrong in
totem and rhythmbox (tags encoding is CP1251).
In forums I see phrase about enviroment variable GST_* (variable name
and link lost), wich can help. But it's not worked at that time for me.
