For what it is worth, I have been running for last couple of weeks the original
patch from here
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/4520 applied to mutter
46.2 ubuntu package. (I manually rebuild mutter from source with the package
applied).
I did not experience crashes anym

I get the same bug, and it's triggered several times a day for me.
The easiest way to trigger it it is use zoom, and start to move its window.

I was hit by this issue, when for some reason the left clicks (but not
the right ones) on the touchpad were occasionally blocked (Ubuntu 18.04
kernel 5.4.0-48). Disabling the extensions (I had two: appindicators and
dock) solved the issue.
