There is an issue with the styling of transmission where there is a
black line near the end of the scroll area when there is more content to
scroll to. This issue has already been fixed upstream and should not be
difficult to backport:

Currently, the icon background color for rhythmbox under unity is off
white. I think it should be changed to a color that better suits the
icon, for example, a yellow that matches the inner part of the speaker.

I don't know the current status of this bug, but I made a patch to fix
part of the issue.
The patch adds a GSettings option (com.canonical.Unity.Panel.menubar-
always-visible) that allows making the global menubar always visible.
This patch was done with the unity in 13.10 repos right now, but it
I believe that the reason pithos was using firefox was because your
$BROWSER environmental variable was set to firefox. You should unset it
to fix that problem.
The hanging gui issue is fixed in my pull request:
