I have the same problem. In my case, it is due to stray gnome processes
that aren't killed properly by --. Logging out
and killing them from a text prompt fixes the problem.

I have attached two perl scripts that I use to rotate my screen on an
x61 tablet. They should work (more or less) on the x60 tablet as well.
They handle xrandr, wacom rotation, and also set the arrow buttons on
the front panel to the appropriate keyboard arrow keys. rotscreen.new
