Right now I've made a initramfs with a nice usplash, and then selected
/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-ubuntu.so. The bootup sequence is nice
and shiny, the shutdown sequence is brown etc. The preview with 'usplash
-c' is with a black background.

inconsistency between preview and actual splash
Public bug reported:
old usplash: brown background, fugly.
new usplash: black background, orange text with a mirror effect.
The new usplash shows fine both with "usplash -c" in console, and in
usplash-switcher. But after changing, and updating initramfs, it is
still the old usplash showing.
