tried it on ext3 and the problem persisted. It seems like most of us are
using i7 as well, so maybe someone should try to delay the X
server/gnome DE from loading until gnome-settings-daemon is already

Any chance that this fix would make its way back to 10.04? I've had
this problem since karmic and am still using lucid. When I upgraded I
also had the problem in Maverick (I rolled back to lucid for other
easons).

I installed the backport and restarted the computer. I got and NVIDIA
error decided to use the reduced graphics and was able to connect fine.
Restarted the laptop reconfigured the drivers on the drivers error
screen resetting to default and now cant see the driver in NM.

Oh, is that what elfclass means? I am on a 64 bit system but did not
manually install realplayer. I already removed realplayer but the problem
consisted. The new strace said something about the Canberra libs. I'll
post that new strace up here for you to look at later, once I'm on the right
