I was having a similar problem with my Epson Perfection V33 flatbed and
Xsane. The Xsane community (Mark Buda) pointed out that there is a
problem with Linux handling XHCI mode. I went into my BIOS and disabled
XHCI mode and now my scanner is working normally. I forgot to point out

I am using 64 bit 12.10 Precise. Previously (64 bit 12.04) I had a
similar problem which was resolved (unsure how but I suspect through
regular s/w updates). The problem has reemerged and is particularly bad
