I can confirm that have the same exact bug after I upgraded Ubuntu to
24.10.
Before I had 24.04 and lightdm worked as expected.
I have the same bug on a freshly installed lightdm on a VM with 24.10 so

the Ubuntu login credentials by logging in directly to the system and

by Marc Deslauriers. Unfortunately I see the same behavior, so I had to

Never mind, the problem was having meson installed in my local user also
with pip: after removing the pip meson and reinstalling the repository
meson it worked.

It seems that the meson package is broken on 18.10 beta: if you install
it an then try to run it, you get this error:
$ meson -v

Ok, I found the source of the problem:
I use a post-installation script for Ubuntu that installs several
packages. This script installed "unity-tweak-tool" and "indicator-
multiload" that have as dependency several Unity and indicators
packages. After I removed those two packages, all the unused
