I had been having this problem with OpenJDK 6
[openjdk-6-jre 6b27-1.12.6-1ubuntu0.12.04.2]
and NetBeans 7.3.1. This problem first occurred
with the most recent upgrade of OpenJDK 6
in Ubuntu 12.04. The problem does not occur
after an upgrade to OpenJDK 7. See these bug

I have discovered what MAY be a workaround for this bug. I installed
gnome-session-fallback 3.2.1-0ubuntu8 on my desktop and [so far] I have
not experianced any freezes while running gnome classic. I would like to
wait a while to be sure but it looks good so far.
