The only thing I had to do differently was run 'sudo apt-get remove
mariadb-server-5.5' as dpkg complained about dependencies.

All,
The only way that I got this fixed was to reinstall 9.0.4 on my machine.
Now both my Samsung flat planel is recognized AND my parallel port printer.

I tried the steps shown above, and I still only get a serial printer
only.
As far as editing the /etc/modules file, I did the following:
su root (then entered the admin password)
Then I edited the /etc/modules file to contain:
parport_pc
lp
rtc
sbp2
