What fixed the issue for me was reverting to "Ubuntu on Xorg".
The noob that I am can not explain why, but somehow this worked.

I've had the same bug, however I am unable to open up the copy dialog
(even when using ALT+TAB). It appears to be the same bug as

mentioned I have not had any issues with partition mentioned in my
/etc/fstab.

I'd query comment #6 - for me, the proposed fix for the linked bug
466389 has not resolved the problem which occurs on some DVDs but not
others, on a machine with karmic-proposed and one without.

Same thing is happening to me ever since I upgraded my notebook to
jaunty.
Interestingly it doesn't happen on my desktop where I'm still running a
2.6.27-14 kernel because I can't get the nvidia drivers running on a
newer kernel by dkms, but that's a different story...

Some weeks ago I installed grass with the deb (same version) from debian, which
worked fine for me so far.
Today I purged the debian deb and installed the ubuntu deb to add the output to
the bug report. However, no error even with the ubuntu package today. Maybe the
bug can be closed now?!

When starting up grass, I get this error message, and no GUI comes up (only
splash screen for a little while),

suggestion I've had towards fixing this after asking on several different
locations, it's /reall
ell Dimension 5100, I've got a SATA controller that has a
SATA drive hooked up to it and because Linux refused to install onto
that an older (P)ATA drive, it runs in 'combined' mode to be able to use
both the SATA and (P)ATA drive.
