Hi, I got a similar problem today after running

to upgrade to 14.04.
After running it my desktop cannot show up when reboot.
However, I found I can still use Cirl+Alt+F1 to go to tty1 and login using my
user account with root privilege.

It's interesting. I created a new system account, login to ubuntu, configure
the uoa, start the empathy, it works.
If I login using my own system account created long ago, I configure the uoa

After setting up my online accounts in System Settings => Online
Accunts, Empathy still say "You need to setup an account to see contacts
here", and I cannot change status from offline to online. See attached

Sorry...But I just confirmed that this problem was not related to
NetworkManager. I created a new user as root user, logged in unity, and
NetworkManager behaved OK. It could be the permission problem of my
original user account, though it was also a root user. Anyway, thanks!
