This is an ergonomic problem.
It is not possible to change the status from "offline" to "available" directly
from the notification area menu.
You have to select "Instant messaging" first in the "messages" menu ("envelope"

I have installed a third party applicationwhich had the good idea to name their
binary with a space in it.
When I try to launch it via the deskbar Applet, it finds it corectly (and
displays the space), but it is unable to execute it.
