The reported problem still affects Intrepid and Jaunty. The source of the
problem is upstream, in vanilla kernel itself.
H/W products affected seem to be the whole HP Netserver LT, LP and LC ranges.

Ok. It is a pitty, that looked like an easy to fix problem.
I have reenabled usplash (still no output) and I am attaching the output
from dmesg in case it helps. Although I have given it a quick read and
have not found anything.

After loading the kernel, the first line reads:
/sbin/lrm-video: not found
I had not noticed until today.
I verified (gzip -dc | cpio -t) that the file is actually not copied to
initrd. Either the problem lies in initramfs-tools or in linux-
restricted-modules.
