Not sure how/why the profile would have been modified and given I know
nothing about AppArmor I assume this happened during one of the previous
updates/upgrades.

Somebody in the Forum suggested to add the output of inxi, so here it is

Looked at the Additional Drivers on Software & Updates and noticed that
the driver for the Intel CPU was not enabled (Do Not Use was selected)
Given that right now I don't have much to loose, I enabled the additional
driver.
I now get a black screen with the latest Kernel, but no more flashing in
Given the lack of response I assume I have the only laptop with this problem.
What can I do to get help?

the LiveCD.
Not sure what additional info to provide, so have attached a few files I
thought may be important.
Pretty much stuck here as the only option right now seems to be be to go back
to 16.04.

Prior to the upgrade the laptop hypbrid card didn't work as expected;
the nvidia driver was never used. This was fixed in 15.04

As I had some corrupted files on an encrypted file system, I moved the
encrypted files to an unencrypted folder (to figure out which files were
corrupted). I had moved about 360GB (of 380GB) media files when it hung.
So I think my problem is in some way related
After posting the problem on the amanda mailing list, I got one response
that indicated the network driver as a possible culprit.

Just had another freeze.
The amanda backup was running again; this is now the third time that the
backup was running while the system 'froze'; too much of a coincidence I
think, but not sure what to do next. I will post to the amanda mailing
list too.
