I have the same symptoms on a different laptop (Asus Zenbook UX32VD),
and only since 16.04 upgrade.
Some observations:
1) Only seems to affect GTK+ applications. Xterm, Chromium and KDE applications
work while e.g. gnome-terminal and gedit are missing characters.
2) I tried "fc-cache -f -r -v" t

Just a small usability problem.
Atleast under my kde session, $UPSTART_JOB is set to 'startkde'.
This causes that executing '/sbin/stop' in terminal automatically kills the

This is quite easy to do accidentally by
Found out two things:
1) Using gdb, I found that evince is not in the SwitcherModel._inner
vector. It has only 5 entries, which correspond to the desktop icon and
4 other applications I had running. It seems that evince is not in
LauncherModel either, but there is one unity::launcher::BamfLauncher
Just got this issue (with evince). If anyone can suggest any useful
information I can collect when the issue is happening, please tell.

To reproduce:
1. Enable the Fade and Trailfocus plugins. Set Trailfocus "Saturation

Unfortunately (or fortunately) this bug occurs extremely rarely on my
computer. In fact, I haven't seen it since I made the bug report. Could
be that it is something totally unrelated to Ubuntu 12.04 update, I was
just alarmed when it happened just two days after I upgraded.

My WLAN connection suddenly dropped, and would not work again before

various parameters with hdparm, and -B is the only thing that matters.
