FWIW the OOo quickstarter icon works perfectly in Ubuntu 9.10 with the
New Wave theme (which is similarly dark like the default theme in
10.04), so this looks like a regression to me.

I have resolved this issue on a Dell D620 with a 1440x900 display with a
GForce 7 Series graphics card in kubuntu / feisty
aptitude install nvidia-glx-new
restarted X-Server
with the d620 the 16x9 display is not properly detected. under system
settings / monitor + display / administrator mode /
After further testing I have discovered that:
1. Users settings, when first started, doesn't show all users regardless
of gconf settings
2. If start Users settings and _then_ start gconf-editor and _then_
toggle the state of my newly added "show_all" (with underscore) setting,
this DOES cause Use
