Had this today. I upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10 to 15.04 and somewhere
along the line I started getting messages such as

unsatisfactory workaround to do the whole thing manually.
NOTE: assumes that your external LUKS encrypted drive is mounted as
/dev/sdb1 and the device name in /dev/mapper is wdcrypt. Change these
for your own situation.
Create 2 scripts - mount-luks and unmount-luks (or umount-luks if you
are a

Things have gone from bad to worse today.
After flummy's email I upgraded and rebooted.
The system came up with new error messages about
/lib/udev/watershed not found
at this stage it seems to have abandoned looking for a password.
Had to ESC out of this to the shell.

I have been experimenting how to work around this. I may have a partial
(and slightly embarrassing) solution.
When the password/passphrase prompt comes up, hit BACKSPACE about 20-30
times.
Type in your normal password.

I am also experiencing this with Karmic. I find that I have to enter
my passphrase multiple times. Sometimes it doesn't work at all, and I
have to Ctrl/Alt/Del, reboot, and then try again. Eventually the system
gets my passphrase, but this is clearly a mission critical problem. I

OK - got this figured.
It looks like I had used the customisation interface within emacs to
turn the desktop-save mode on as well, but I also had it in my init.el
file.
by removing it from the init file that fixed my problems.

Yes, I ran the memtest from the Ubuntu bootloader menu overnight, and it
didn't find any memory problems.
I have now installed edgy eft, and am no longer experiencing any
problems.
