OK, I did some research and debugging, and it seems that this bug is
related to Unicode issues encountered here:

In totem plugins 2.22.1-ubuntu1, I get same error.

This bug will probably never be fixed, due to licensing problems.
Canon's driver is only partially released under the free licence, and
until that changes, the Ubuntu team can not solve the issues around it.
Until then, we have to rely on the tutorials like the one mentioned, and
