I solved it. It had to do with a corrupted profile indeed.
I have run
firefox -ProfileManager
deleted the old profile, made a new one
and it worked!!!

It is happening again. I notice that it happens if I try to download
images when evolution is still downloading (other) emails from the
server.

problems with the desktop. When I try to change my Appearance (System ->
Preferences -> Appearance), when I select the normal or extra mode for
Visual Effects, program fails to save the settings, it hangs.

It does not manage in Gmail as well. Pidgin does, however; therefore I
switched to Pidgin. It's a shame, as evolution is better integrated ,
anyhow I can live with it.
