I got a log for a successful connect!
Is it possible that a gabble plugin/thread is spawned twice hence
reading the buffer in an out of order fashion?
On the SUCCESS log, only one init of gabble is found.
On the FAIL log, two inits are found.

FYI, the driver on Windows 7 has an option which says "Enable
promiscuous mode" (?on a 3G pen?) which, after enabled, results on the
same behavior as if one does "ifconfig usb0 arp" on Linux.

The bug you just linked with seems related to Jabber, whereas the bug we
have here is related to Bonjour. I do not see the relevance of linking
the two since, besides both involving Pidgin crashing, the two seem to
have different causes for the crash.

I hear the same "pop" sound I hear during startup & shutdown now also
during normal "operations".
PS: I don't know how you're sorting duplicates. If it is by the output
of `aplay -l', namely:
$ LC_ALL=C aplay -l

I'd say this is a GM965 exclusive issue. On KDE disabling Desktop
Effects also workarounds the issue.

Ok, it was NOT related to suspend nor hibernate.
`sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon stop`
fixes the problem.
The problem only arises at a place where there is a pulseaudio server on
the network.
