Bugs #530195 and #554999 may be very similar to this one. I also twitter
not updating for hours/days at a time (even when replies/searches are
working).

I also see the same "Twitter messages generally don't get received,
except for replies/searches - sending works" behaviour. I had opened bug
#554999 fir it.
Note that in my case the problem may go away by itself, but then later
it will come back, etc.
