The workaround described in the forum thread linked to by a7x (see above) does
the job. Problem seems to be resolved on my machine.

Sorry for not posting a follow-up to my report, any earlier. The problem that I
reported on Nov. 21 persisted for several weeks. Sometime in January 08, it
"resolved itself" (I believe during an 'apt-get upgrade') and the dist-upgrade
