Yep, that's my exact problem. It seems like I remembering being able to change the brightness before Gnome was loaded in previous versions, but I'm not sure. Either way, the brightness dims and I'm not able to change it until Gnome is fully loaded. -- screen dims on boot https://bugs.launchpad.
