No, I think this was fixed in recent versions of ALSA.

Update: I got my system working. Apparently I used the wrong driver. I
got it working by changing my system language from Finnish to English,
started Restricted Driver Manager and installed the driver via that.
Previously I was unable to use RDM because of another bug.
This bug report may be close
I forgot to mention that Ubuntu 7.04 worked perfectly on the same
system. The problem first appeared on a clean install of Ubuntu 7.10.

audio hardware and not in Linux. Apparently one of my amplifiers broke
