Upgraded to Lucid a few days ago, and I got this problem too. I have an Acer
Aspire 5620, ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 graphic card with opensource drivers.
Just after grub i get a black screen with a blinking cursor on the top left
corner, and just before getting to the desktop (I have auto login)

allright, but using amsn and skype, for example, I cannot toggle asian
language typing with scim-anthy. only way is to write on a separate
gedit fole, for ezample, and copy and paste the text in the messagin

1) If I run firefox normally, as soon as I run cooliris and start scrolling the
wall it freezes, sometime the screen becomes black, sometimes it just freezes
and I can move the mouse, but nothing else, no key nor shortcut is getting me
everywhere
hi, i also had the same problem, vlc on hardy closes if I try to use openGl. I
have Ati as well and with other configurations video quality is poor. I managed
to solve (partially) the problem installing latest proprietary drivers from
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
Quality is now good as
