Wireless works.
I found that there was an additional wireless entry in the network
connections applet. Once I removed that I was again able to connect to
my wireless network using 3.2

The error occurs in conjunction with WUBI. Later updates of the
updates of Karmic do not display the kernel panic message but also
fail to boot properly.
update 19 and 21 silently fail and reboot
update 20 display a message that the kernel needs loading

Thank you for spending time on my issue.
Messing around with the volume controls I find I now do have back
sound in conjunction with Lucid Lynx 2.6.31-20. The 2.6.32-18-generic
version of Lucid will not boot for me (yet).
