@Brian Murray, It would appear you are correct. Further tests proved the hard drive is faulty. All in order now that a new hard drive has been installed. For the record, memory is fine and system self-diagnostics reported no fault apart from the hard drive (S.M.A.R.T Hard drive failure immenent)
