Are you actually trying to run MATE? If not, I would try removing
ubuntu-mate-core.
Sometimes having multiple desktops installed can cause issues on
upgrade, and based on the log it sounds like attempting to upgrade that
metapackage is hitting trouble.

Yes, I can understand the frustration here. The sshd socket activation
feature in Ubuntu has evolved since it was first introduced in 22.10,
and is finally settling now. However, I think this patch was still
important to make so that we could fix bug 2080216, and to align the
systemd unit defaults

Recently, GCC 15 became the default in Ubuntu. With GCC 15 on aarch64,
"-mbranch-protection has been extended to support the Guarded Control
Stack (GCS) extension. This support is included in -mbranch-
protection=standard and can be enabled individually using -mbranch-
protect
The root cause I think needs to be sorted out with a combination of
default build flag changes and re-builds.
systemd builds with -Wl,--fatal-warnings, so I think the best thing to
do for now is ignore this specific warning with -Wl,-z,gcs-report=none.
I have uploaded that change now.

LXD VM with:

I am confused about the status of this in questing. It's marked fix
committed for questing, but (a) I don't see anything in -proposed for
this package, and (b) I don't see the change (from plucky/noble
unapproved) applied in the questing version.
