Had the same Problem, "sudo aptitude install compiz-gnome" fixed it for
me.
Synaptics indeed wanted to remove metycity and ubuntu-desktop.

I've got the same Error Message, but it happens in another way.
Only sometimes, when i start my Laptop, the mousepointer gets a foursqared
fuzzy white background.
Directly after that the screen gets black and nothing happens anymore.
Rebooting doesn't help either.
But, when I start in recovery mo
