I must clarify my last comment: I believed that my floppy was disabled
in the bios, but when I went to double-check, there wasn't even an
option. So my floppy must be permanently enabled on this laptop.
Regardless, the kernel is still looking for a floppy drive that does not
exist

I can confirm this error with the final release cd,
ubuntu-7.04-desktop.iso. I have a Compaq Evo N600c with no floppy drive
and disabled in the bios
