After more research, it seems that the problem is derived because the
touchpad is being incorrectly detected as a PS/2 mouse. Marking this bug
as a duplicate of #760142

Just to expand on details, this bug *is* happening on Dell Vostro 3550
with Ubuntu 11, but the correct shortcut key is Fn + F3. It works as
photonic reported (notification popup is displayed correctly, but the
touchpad behavior is not modified).
