Ticking off "Show visual effects when an audio file is played" solved
the problem. Probably the visual effects are not really compatible with
the fglrx X driver.

When I try to play a flac file, I get this output from totem (on Ubuntu
7.10 gutsy, version 2.20.0-0ubuntu3):
