Hi Dave,
I've managed to capture the output of top on my machine while having
console window open. You will see at some point Xorg and firefox at
crazy CPU load and then Xorg for some times completely vanishes from the
list and firefox drops to zero load.
I hope this helps?

I can add another fact: The problem doesn't occur when using Ubuntu in
"Gnome fallback (no effects)" mode.

Ah ... the last paragraph should read "with Chromium 28.0.1500.71 Ubuntu
13.04 (28.0.1500.71-0ubuntu1.13.04.1) shows the same behaviour plus
Chromium after some time shows a "He's dead Jim" page. WTF?!"

I've just tested. Before I started Firefox Xorg.0.log's last line was "[
188.082]". After I experienced the stall the last line was still "[
188.082]". So nothing had been added to it. In today's log file there's
also no trace of those errors you've spotted. So they could be
unrelated.

from cups' error_log I would say that there is an error regarding the
SpliX filter - but I can't say for sure.
