As a temporary fix, I have added the following memory usage limits to
/etc/security/limits.conf
root soft data 3000
root hard data 6000
It seems to work well and I can run many intensive X applicatio

The bug seems to be solved with the new version of libgl1-mesa-dri,
7.1-1ubuntu1 from intrepid.
I have intel video hardware and used to get frequent crashes with
blender. The fix seems to be independent of x
Update: mine was actually an hardware problem, and had to replace the
USB mouse.
