Thankyou for your reply concerning my login bug. Fortunately the problem
has disappeared with installation of 19.10 which I am finding to be the
best Ubuntu release since the return to gnome desktop. Many thanks to all

One final observation to make, re-attempting the upgrade fails reliably
at the same point. The process is hung after printing:
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-17-generic
qps shows the process tree as dpkg -> sh -> sh -> mkinitramfs ->
mkinitramfs -> modprobe; awk.

I had a similar problem, but it might be subtly different. The upgrade
hung after printing:
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-17-generic
After a half hour of no discernible activity, I aborted the process with
Ctrl+C on the terminal. T
